A Lesson from the Big Boy

This morning I went downstairs to do my quiet time. I've been trying to get up around 5:30 and spend time with Jesus. This week I'm reading about having a positive attitude. Geez! That's a lesson I need to learn, especially in situations like the one I'm getting ready to describe. The biggest obstacle to my morning quiet time is children waking up too early for me to finish.

This morning, sure enough, right around 5:50 this morning I hear Oliver and Brent talking upstairs. "Where is she? I want Mommy!" As Brent was half-asleep and was trying to coax Oliver back in bed with little luck, I walked up the stairs and sweet talked him into lying down until I had gotten a shower and dried my hair.

The shower was successful and a fantastic refresher. Until I got out. I heard Oliver talking to Brent again about wanting me. I jumped out of the shower, wrapped myself in a towel, and walked Oliver back to his room. Again. This time I left the Christmas tree plugged up and some books in his bed so he would have something to do, thinking maybe he'd stay in bed this time. I explained how it was important for me to get ready for work and that I would like to dry my hair so it would not look silly.

Back to my room again. I put on my clothes. And no sooner had a finished combing a brush through half of my soaking hair than Oliver came in again. "Oliver, what are you doing? I just told you..."

That's when he interrupted me. "Mommy! Look at this picture in my book. It's the shepards, just like in the Christmas song about Jesus in the car!"

I took a deep breath and we read the Christmas story together. We talked about Mary, Joseph, and the baby. He pointed out the shepards and counted the wise men. At the end we discussed why we give presents at Christmas and how Jesus was the best gift ever.

I was running behind from that moment on for the rest of the morning. But it was worth every second! I'm glad that Oliver slowed me down to truly experience Jesus this morning!
